This is another article I originally posted to my personal Facebook page, having now assimilated myself into St Andrews.
Wounds sustained in Freshers’ / Week 1:
- Bruised elbows and knees (both elbows, both knees) and cuts to both feet from climbing up a rockface entirely unnecessarily.
- That’s about the only unfacetious one on this list. And one of several fictitious.
- Battered sole for dinner the other day. And scrambled eggs for breakfast. Oh wait, that doesn’t work.
- Scalded index finger from using the coffee-jug setting with a coffee-cup. I would point out that the coffee went for me because I’m a mug, but I don’t have a finger to point with.
- (If I get a derogatory comment on this I’ll be the victim of both spellings of mocha.)
- Sore ribs from laughing at Catullus’ witty verses.
- Blown mind from some of the insights gleaned in doing the Odyssey.
- Broken heart from that nice children’s drama-group I helped out at in Chester: Jigsaw Music Theatre are also doing the Odyssey, but without me. My heart’s in Jigsaw pieces. :(
Jigsaw have since asked me to write from afar a song and help with the script (particularly in re Odysseus’ re-insertion into Ithacan society and re-assertion of his Ithacan kingship). I already knew I was to design the poster and programme for this new production, which I can now tell is to be entitled “The Strange Adventures of Odysseus”.
