The original series of articles about the Eurovision Song Contest was much longer than this article here; I have replaced it with “best bits”. Text in pale blue was added after I removed the articles, on the 21st of September 2012.
I’ve written some very long reviews of this year’s Eurovision entries.
Out of the forty-two entries, only three get my six-star (out of six) rating. I liked Bosnia and Herzegovina’s comparison of families and other social groups with the lumps of flour that collect in a sieve (with the grains that fall through the sieve being too inconsequential to matter). I liked Germany’s song for being chic, sleek, and rather oblique, appropriately for a song about a mysterious stranger. And I really liked Denmark’s plea for the young to not get drawn into the vanity and insanity that’s a problem for humanity.
In case you Jedwardians were excited by the prospect of this post, I gave Ireland four-out-of-six-stars for their slick portrayal of being drunk (hence the lyric “heading for a car crash”).
As for the U.K., they (we?) got five stars. The reference to rain made me grin; the reference to drizzle made me giggle; the reference to downpours induced guffaws. Funny how a downpour can cheer me up.
